As the advancement of technology continues within the HVACR industry, a number of educators are scuffling to come up with innovative methods of making sure the new generation of service technicians is fully equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to stay on par with the existing crop of trained technicians.
Systems, controls and just about everything that is associated with an HVAC system continue to become more and more complex as technology advances. As a result, a number of HVAC instructors are taking steps to ensure that they impart knowledge on the fundamentals as it relates to the training of current technicians and students.
A number of students seem to have the desire to learn only about the section of the training program that addresses the higher technological aspects of things and seem to have little or no interest in learning the fundamentals and the basics of HVAC systems. However, eliminating this aspect would water down the importance of the fundamentals and basics, which are very effective when used as a base on which more complex knowledge is built. Taking this approach to training future HVAC technicians will assist in solidifying the basis on which they can fall back.
It is extremely important that students are taught the fundamentals and that they learn them well. Technological advances have not resulted in any major change where electrical theory and the physics of applied thermodynamics are concerned. Irrespective of the intricate and sophisticated changes that are made to the HVAC and controls systems, they are all rooted in fundamentals that remain unchanged. Psychrometrics is important, the flow of heat goes from hot to cold and subcooling and superheat are essential concepts. The student who later encounters a complex and innovative system that has a problem, will find that his or her capacity to apply the well-learned set of basics and fundamentals remains the basis of success within the HVACR industry.
Trained technicians who are working within the industry have found that having sound knowledge of fundamentals in areas such as basic math, basic applied thermodynamics and electronics have been the key factor as it relates to the ability to understand the most complex issues. Being able to apply fundamental knowledge to new systems and products will open doors to staying on top in the industry, regardless of how complex the task. In essence, the better trained HVAC contractors are, the more efficient and reliable they will be.
