Air Filtration Whole-Home Filter Upgrades

Reviewed by the Brewer HVAC technical team • Updated May 2026

A standard 1-inch furnace filter catches lint and large dust. It does almost nothing for wildfire smoke, fine particulates, pollen, or pet dander. Whole-home filtration upgrades — typically 4-inch or 5-inch media filters with MERV 13-16 ratings — capture the small stuff that affects your health, your sinuses, and how the inside of your home smells during fire season.

What we handle

  • MERV 13-16 media filter cabinet installation
  • HEPA filtration for severe allergy or medical-grade applications
  • Carbon filtration for odor and VOC removal
  • Filter rack assessment — most older systems need a bigger rack to handle higher-MERV filters
  • Blower motor evaluation — verifying your existing blower can move air through the new filter
  • Annual filter replacement service

Common signs you might need this

  • Wildfire smoke smell penetrates the house even with windows closed
  • Visible dust collecting on surfaces within days of cleaning
  • Allergy or asthma symptoms worse indoors than outdoors
  • Pet odors persist despite regular cleaning
  • You can see dirt/dust inside the duct registers

Frequently asked

What MERV rating do I need?

For most Nevada County homes, MERV 13 hits the sweet spot — captures wildfire smoke and most pollen without overly restricting airflow. MERV 16 captures more but requires a blower motor that can handle the static pressure. We will recommend the right level for your specific system.

How often do I change the filter?

Higher-rated 4-inch and 5-inch media filters typically last 6-12 months — much longer than 1-inch filters. We can put you on an annual replacement schedule.

Will a higher-MERV filter hurt my system?

Only if your blower motor cannot move air through it. We measure static pressure before and after installation to verify the system handles the upgrade correctly. If the existing blower is undersized, we will tell you up front.
