Mini Splits Ductless Comfort, Room by Room

Reviewed by the Brewer HVAC technical team • Updated May 2026

Mini splits solve the problems central HVAC creates. They work in rooms with no ductwork, in additions where extending the existing system is impractical, in older homes where running ducts means tearing up walls. We install single-zone mini splits for that one always-too-hot upstairs room and multi-zone systems for whole-home applications.

What we handle

  • Single-zone installations for additions, garages, ADUs, sunrooms, master suites
  • Multi-zone installations (up to 8 indoor units on one outdoor unit)
  • Carrier, Mitsubishi, and other major-brand equipment options
  • Wall-mount, ceiling cassette, ducted concealed, and floor-mount indoor units
  • Refrigerant line set, electrical, and condensate drainage
  • Wi-Fi controls and smart thermostat integration
  • Rebates for qualifying high-efficiency systems

Common signs you might need this

  • A specific room is always too hot or too cold
  • You added an addition or ADU and central HVAC will not reach
  • Your home has no ductwork (older homes, hydronic-heated homes)
  • You want zone control without a full duct retrofit
  • You want to cool a garage or workshop

Frequently asked

How is a mini split different from window AC?

Mini splits are permanently installed, far quieter, far more energy-efficient (usually 20+ SEER vs 10-12 SEER for window units), provide both heating and cooling, and do not block your window. They are also dramatically more expensive to install — but pay back over time.

Can a mini split heat my whole house?

A multi-zone mini split system can absolutely heat and cool a whole house, especially in mid-size homes. For larger homes or homes with strong existing ductwork, a central system or hybrid setup often pencils out better. We will walk you through both options.

Do mini splits work in cold weather?

Modern cold-climate mini splits hold their full heating output well below freezing — far below anything Nevada County sees. They are an excellent year-round solution.

Are mini splits noisy?

Indoor units run at conversation-volume on the highest fan speed and are nearly inaudible on low. Outdoor units are quieter than most central AC condensers.
