SEER and SEER2 Ratings Explained A Homeowner's Guide to Choosing Efficient AC Equipment

SEER is the number that tells you how efficiently an air conditioner or heat pump cools your home. A higher SEER means lower summer energy bills for the same cooling. What SEER actually measures

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is the cooling output a system delivers over a typical cooling season divided by the electricity it uses, measured in watt-hours. Higher number, less power for the same comfort. A unit rated SEER 18 uses noticeably less electricity than a SEER 14 unit to cool the same house. SEER is a seasonal average, not a single-moment reading, so it reflects how the system performs across a real summer of varying temperatures. It applies to central air conditioners and to heat pumps in cooling mode. For heating efficiency, heat pumps use a separate number called HSPF. The updated procedure raises the external static pressure used in the lab, which mimics the resistance of real ductwork instead of an open bench. Because the test is harder, a SEER2 number runs a little lower than the old SEER number for the same machine, roughly 4 to 5 percent. A unit that read SEER 15 often reads about SEER2 14.3.
