AC Repair Same-Day Service Available

Reviewed by the Brewer HVAC technical team • Updated May 2026

When the AC quits in mid-July, you do not need a sales pitch — you need a technician at your door. We run repair calls across Grass Valley, Nevada City, Auburn, and the surrounding service area year-round, with same-day appointments available for urgent issues. Every truck is stocked with the parts that fail most often on Nevada County systems, so most repairs are completed on the first visit.

What we handle

  • Diagnostic visit with a written quote before any work begins — no surprise charges
  • Refrigerant leak detection, repair, and recharge (R-410A and legacy R-22 systems)
  • Capacitor, contactor, and relay replacement
  • Condenser fan motor and blower motor replacement
  • Evaporator coil cleaning and inspection — a dirty or iced coil is one of the most common reasons air conditioning stops cooling
  • Condensate drain clearing — clogged drains cause water damage and can trigger safety shutoffs
  • Thermostat troubleshooting and replacement (smart thermostat compatible)
  • Compressor diagnostics — and an honest call on repair vs replacement when the compressor is failing
  • Service on every major brand, not just the systems we install

Common signs you might need this

  • AC running but the air coming out is warm or weak
  • Loud humming, grinding, or buzzing from the outdoor unit
  • Ice forming on the refrigerant lines or evaporator coil
  • AC short-cycles — turns on and off rapidly
  • Energy bills have spiked with no change in your usage habits
  • Water pooling near the indoor unit

What happens during an AC repair call

We send a NATE-certified technician in a fully stocked truck. The visit starts with a system-level diagnostic — refrigerant pressures, electrical readings, and operating temperatures — before anything is touched. If we find the problem, we write a quote before any work begins. You approve it, we fix it, and we test the system end-to-end before leaving. No return trips for the most common failures. Most repairs in Nevada County are completed on the first visit.

For trickier problems — a leak that requires dye and a return inspection, or a compressor that needs manufacturer verification — we tell you upfront and schedule the second visit around your availability. Brewer has been running repair calls in Grass Valley and Nevada City since 1980. Our technicians know the local equipment: which brands were installed heavily in different decades, which refrigerant systems are aging out, and which failure modes show up year after year in the mountain climate.

AC repair costs in Grass Valley

Costs depend on what failed. A bad capacitor or weak contactor — the most common failure when a system runs fine all day and then stops in July heat — runs a few hundred dollars including labor. A refrigerant leak on an R-410A system costs more, especially if the leak is in the coil rather than a fitting. The best way to think about it: call us for a diagnostic and we will tell you exactly what it will cost before any work begins. If the estimate does not make sense for the age of your system, we will say so.

One note on refrigerant: R-22 systems installed before roughly 2010 are expensive to recharge because R-22 is no longer manufactured in the United States. A large R-22 recharge can cost more than converting to a new R-410A system. We will tell you honestly when a recharge is throwing good money after bad and walk you through the replacement numbers side by side.

Wildfire smoke and your AC system

Nevada County has seen more smoky summers in the last decade than in the previous three combined. Heavy smoke season puts unusual stress on residential air conditioning. Clogged air filters reduce airflow across the evaporator coil, which causes ice formation and can damage the compressor over time. Smoke also loads the condensate drain with debris and coats outdoor condenser coils with fine particulate.

If your AC struggled or stopped during a smoke event last summer, a post-season inspection is worth scheduling. We clean the outdoor coil, inspect for ice damage to the evaporator, verify the condensate drain is clear, and check your air filter configuration. If you are running a MERV 11 or 13 filter to capture smoke particles — which we recommend — your system may need an airflow adjustment to compensate for the increased restriction. Running high-MERV filters in an undersized filter rack is one of the most common causes of coil freeze we see in Nevada County.

Frequently asked

How fast can you get here?

For most repair calls in Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Auburn we can be on-site the same day if you call before noon. Outlying areas (Truckee, Tahoe City) are typically next-day.

How much does an AC repair cost?

It depends on the failure. A capacitor replacement might be a few hundred dollars; a refrigerant leak repair on an older system can run more. We always provide a written estimate before starting work, so you can decide.

Should I repair or replace?

Rule of thumb: if the system is more than 12 years old and the repair cost is approaching half the cost of a new system, replacement usually pencils out — especially when you factor in the energy savings of a high-efficiency unit.

Do you service systems you did not install?

Yes. We work on every major brand. About half of our repair calls are on systems other companies installed.

What if my system is under warranty?

Many manufacturer warranties cover parts but not labor. We will check the warranty status before quoting, and if a covered part is failing we will handle the warranty claim with the manufacturer for you.

My AC is clicking or humming but not starting — what is wrong?

Repeated clicking at startup usually means a relay or capacitor is failing — the contactor is trying to close but cannot engage. A loud hum with no starting points to a locked compressor or failed start capacitor. Both are repairable in most cases and are easier fixes when caught early. Do not leave a struggling compressor running — it can burn out completely.

My air conditioner smells musty — is that normal?

No. A musty smell usually means mold or bacteria has colonized the evaporator coil or condensate drain pan. We clean the coil, treat the drain, and if the problem keeps coming back we can install a UV-C lamp in the air handler to prevent re-growth. It is a common problem in homes that run AC heavily through wildfire smoke season.
