The number tells you how efficiently a system cools, which directly affects what you pay to run it. This guide explains SEER in plain terms so you can decide between a standard and a high-efficiency system for your home and your budget here in the Sierra foothills.

What a SEER Rating Actually Measures

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures how efficiently an air conditioning or heat pump system turns electricity into cooling over a typical season. The number comes from dividing total cooling output (in BTUs) by total electrical energy used (in watt-hours). Think of it like miles per gallon for your HVAC system. A higher SEER means less electricity to keep your home at the same temperature. A 20 SEER unit uses roughly half the energy of a 10 SEER unit to deliver the same cooling. You will also see SEER2 on newer equipment. SEER2 is the current federal testing method, measured under more realistic conditions, so a SEER2 number runs a few percent lower than the older SEER number for the same machine.

A system that is undersized for efficiency or installed poorly can fail HERS testing, which delays your permit and adds cost. Stay closer to the minimum if your home is small, well insulated, or used seasonally. The right answer depends on your home's load, your ductwork, and how you live in it.
