AC Maintenance Catch Problems Before Summer

Reviewed by the Brewer HVAC technical team • Updated May 2026

A 30-minute tune-up in April catches the small problem that becomes a $1,200 emergency call in July. We have been doing seasonal AC maintenance in Nevada County long enough to see the pattern — the systems that get serviced annually last 15-18 years; the ones that do not last 8-10. Maintenance is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a major appliance.

What we handle

  • Full system inspection — refrigerant pressure, electrical connections, capacitor health, blower motor amp draw
  • Coil cleaning (indoor and outdoor) — dirty coils are the #1 cause of efficiency loss
  • Condensate drain flush and treatment
  • Filter replacement (or a recommendation if your filter rack needs upgrading)
  • Thermostat calibration check
  • Detailed write-up of any concerns we find — no upselling, just facts so you can plan

Common signs you might need this

  • You have not had the system professionally serviced in over 12 months
  • Cooling has gradually weakened over the past year
  • Higher-than-usual energy bills last summer
  • Visible dust or debris around the indoor unit
  • You just bought the home and do not know the maintenance history

Frequently asked

How often should I get my AC tuned up?

Once a year, ideally in spring before peak heat. Manufacturers require annual maintenance to keep most warranties valid. If you have a heat pump that runs year-round, we recommend a fall tune-up as well.

Do you offer maintenance plans?

Yes. Our service membership covers spring and fall tune-ups, priority scheduling during peak season, and a discount on any repairs needed. Most members save more on the discount than the membership costs.

Will maintenance really lower my energy bills?

Typically yes. A neglected system can lose 5-15% efficiency per year from dirty coils, low refrigerant, and worn components. Most customers see a measurable drop in cooling cost the month after a thorough tune-up.

How long does a tune-up take?

About 60 to 90 minutes for a residential system. Slightly longer if we find issues that need addressing on the spot.
