Furnace Installation For Sierra Foothill Winters

Reviewed by the Brewer HVAC technical team • Updated May 2026

Sierra foothill winters are not Bay Area winters. A furnace that works fine in Sacramento can be undersized for a poorly-insulated home in Penn Valley at 2,500 feet of elevation. We have been installing residential furnaces across Nevada County since 1980, which means we know which equipment holds up to long-running cold snaps and which does not.

What we handle

  • Manual J load calculation sized to your actual home — square footage, insulation, window orientation, climate zone
  • High-efficiency Carrier furnace installation (90%+ AFUE models)
  • Gas line work, venting, and combustion air requirements per California code
  • Ductwork evaluation and sealing — most older Sierra-area homes have major duct losses
  • Smart thermostat installation (compatible with all major brands)
  • Permit, inspection, and proper disposal of the old unit
  • GoGreen Home Energy Financing for qualified replacements

Common signs you might need this

  • Your existing furnace is 15+ years old
  • Heating bills have climbed faster than gas-rate inflation
  • Some rooms never get warm enough no matter the thermostat setting
  • Visible rust, soot, or cracking on the heat exchanger
  • Repair costs are stacking up year over year
  • You are doing a remodel or adding conditioned space

Frequently asked

Gas furnace, electric furnace, or heat pump?

Depends on your home, your gas service, and your goals. Gas furnaces remain the most common in Nevada County because of cold-weather output. Modern heat pumps work well at our elevation and pair nicely with PG&E rate plans. We will walk you through the trade-offs honestly during the in-home estimate.

How long does an install take?

Most replacements are a one-day job. New installs with ductwork or gas line modifications can run two days. Same-day startup so your heat is back on the day we wrap.

What efficiency rating should I get?

90% AFUE is the modern minimum. 95-98% AFUE pencils out for Nevada County homes that actually use the heat through the winter. We will run the numbers based on your historical gas usage so the upgrade actually pays back.

Will a new furnace be quieter?

Significantly. Variable-speed blower motors run on the lowest setting most of the time and are dramatically quieter than the on-off blowers in older systems.
